DEFINITION
Under the direction of the principal, the resource teacher will work with
children, classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, other specialists, and
parents in designing and providing a program of diagnosis and
prescription, to integrate the implementation and evaluation of
instructional activities. The aim of the program will be to provide
over and above services to identified children in the areas of reading,
language and mathematics at the elementary level.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum requirements are a bachelor's degree, a valid California
Elementary Teaching Credential, and demonstrated competency in the area of
reading and mathematics instruction.
Prerequisites are good health, emotional stability, flexibility, and an
ability to work effectively with children and adults. Priority
consideration shall be given to candidates who have undertaken advanced
college courses and/or clinical training in diagnosis and prescription or
who show a willingness to pursue such studies in the first year of
service.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly
works with children to provide over and above services.

Works
toward individualizing of instruction in accordance with program
objectives, with focus on reading, language and mathematics.

Plans
instruction supportive of the abilities and achievement of pupils.

Diagnoses
the proficiencies in reading, language and mathematics for children,
provides appropriate prescriptive programs based upon the diagnostic
findings, and evaluates progress.

Prepares
and/or organizes appropriate individualized instructional resources
and materials for children's learning needs.

Communicates
with pupils, parents, and staff regarding the child's educational
progress.

Plans,
organizes and implements instructional programs for eligible children
which will supplement and be supportive of the ongoing classroom
program to assure continuous progression for pupils.

Develops
and maintains systems of record keeping for short and long-term
evaluations of pupil progress.

Works
toward enhancement of each child's self-image.

Participates
in in-service meetings.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
A
Resource Teacher serves on the days schools are in session plus required
non-teaching service days, and is placed on the teachers' salary schedule
according to training and experience.
