DEFINITION
Under direction of the Coordinator, Vocational Education Programs, to
provide the recruitment and retention services described in the specially
funded project, "Recruitment and Retention for Females in
Non-Traditional Vocational Programs."
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a standard teaching credential with
specialization in secondary education and the standard designated services
credential for pupil personnel services, or credentials of equivalent
authorization, issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation
and Licensing, is required. Personnel who have served previously as
Vocational Specialists are not required to hold a pupil personnel services
credential.

Education: A master's degree or a commitment to obtain such a degree
within a maximum of three years after appointment is required.
Preference will be given to those with majors in agriculture, business
education, industrial education, or home economics, and to those who have
successfully completed courses in vocational/career education guidance and
courses in work experience education.

Experience: A minimum of three years of certificated experience in
public or private secondary schools, including one year of vocational
counseling and with demonstrated success in curriculum development,
planning and coordinating in-service programs, managing special programs
and in dealing with categorical (vocational) funding. Also, be
familiar with vocational education laws and regulations, career education,
existing vocational and regional occupational programs, gender equity
programs and research regarding adolescent females.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop
and implement a recruitment model for females in non-traditional
vocational programs which will result in the identification of project
participants.

Develop
vocational program recruitment materials and presentations which will
include detailed information on available training opportunities,
skills required, job opportunities in Sacramento area, working
conditions, advanced training opportunities and pay.

Develop
an in-depth occupational guidance and counseling curriculum which will
include individual and group counseling strategies, interview
techniques, recruitment techniques, group session guidelines and
follow-up procedures.

Compile
information about and instructions on methods for administering and
analyzing results of interest assessment, aptitude and exit
information instruments and provide training in use of the materials.

Conduct
group counseling sessions for participants.

Evaluate
participant progress and recommend supportive and/or remedial services
when appropriate.

Follow-up
participants in an effort to determine factors contributing to
success/failure in the project.

Cooperate
with existing teaching and counseling staff in the development of job
sites and the placement of project participants.

Work
with an advisory committee and develop linkages with existing programs
and agencies.

Disseminate
materials developed to appropriate persons and/or agencies and provide
in-service on their use.

Collect
and report evaluation data on activities and participant reactions.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
The
Program Specialist, Recruitment and Retention of Females in
Non-Traditional Vocational Programs, serves on the days schools are in
session plus required non-teaching service days, and is placed on the
Certificated Non-Management Specialist Salary Schedule.
