DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Special Education, the Diagnostic
Teacher will provide diagnosis, program planning, and develop and/or
define those techniques, methods, and materials for pupils who cannot be
properly evaluated in the special classes or centers in order to provide
an assessment and/or program plan to assist in placement as determined at
the subsequent Educational Assessment Services meeting.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a basic teaching credential and a
credential authorizing service in at least one area of special education,
as issued by the California State Preparation and Licensing Commission.

Education: Baccalaureate or higher degree from an approved
institution including advanced training in educational diagnosis and
prescription of pupils with learning disabilities and behavioral
disorders.

Experience: A minimum of three years of full-time teaching
experience in public or private schools, with at least one year of
experience in special education. Demonstrated competency in the area
of individualized instruction based on a diagnostic-prescriptive approach.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides
assessments, program plans, techniques, methods and data that will
best serve pupils whose disabilities in learning, emotional adjustment
and/or physical handicaps which cannot be determined in the special
education classes or centers.

Provides
recommendations in regard to the type of learning environment best
suited to the pupil's needs.

Provides
for a more complete understanding of the pupil's learning and/or
behavior disabilities and educational needs through parent and staff
involvement.

Assists
the program specialist in the coordination of various consultants and
services of support personnel.

Assists
district teachers by demonstrating various strategies and materials to
use with pupils having unique learning needs.

Maintains
a system of records for each pupil assigned, including the school
register.

Serves
as a member of the Educational Assessment Services Team for placement
in the diagnostic class.

Attends
meetings called by the Supervisor, Special Education.

Assists
and consults with the teachers and staff upon entry and discharge from
the diagnostic class.

Assists
the program specialists and support personnel in implementing the
program plan.

Participates
in inservice meetings.

Performs
other duties as required.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
The
Diagnostic Teacher serves on the days schools are in session plus
non-teaching service days, as required, and is placed on the teachers'
salary schedule according to training and experience.
