DEFINITION
Under direction, to enforces the compulsory education laws of the state,
and the Board of Education rules and regulations concerning child welfare
and attendance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a standard designated services credential
with a specialization in pupil personnel services or equivalent is
required.

Education: A master's degree from an approved institution or
commitment to obtain such degree within three years after appointment is
required.
and
Experience: A minimum of two years of certificated experience in
public or private schools is required.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Is
assigned specific schools of the district to serve as an attendance
counselor; makes visits to the homes to investigate cases or irregular
attendance and truancy; counsels with parents and students to correct
poor attendance.

Provides
advisory service to counselors, administrators, parents, and students
concerning questions of legal residence of pupils and appropriate
attendance areas, and interprets the intent of compulsory education
laws and Board of Education rules and regulations concerning
attendance.

Refers
difficult cases to the Hearing Officer, prepares required reports for
the hearing, and participates in the hearing.

Works
in close cooperation with other public agencies, such as Department of
Social Welfare, Probation Department, California Youth Authority,
etc., on cases where students are involved with these agencies.

Provides
communications between the home and school for the benefit of the
child, and improvement of public relations.

Provides
counseling to parents and pupils in areas of child neglect and abuse,
opportunity school, continuation school, unwed mothers, complaints
from citizens, etc.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
The
Child Welfare and Attendance Counselor serves on the days schools are in
session, plus required non-teaching service days, plus five days during
the summer at per diem rate, and is placed on the teachers' salary
schedule according to his training and experience.
