DEFINITION
Under direction of Special Education Department personnel, the Behavior
Intervention Specialist provides support, intervention techniques and
in-service assistance to staff in the management of student's problematic
behaviors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: The minimum requirement is possession of any credential
issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing services in
any field of special education or psychology.

Education: A bachelor's degree is a minimum requirement, but a
master's degree is preferred.
and
Experience: A minimum of two years of certificated experience with
students with disabilities. Trained and experienced in the positive
management of "serious behavior problems" (which are defined as
individual's behaviors which are self-injurious, assaultive, or causing
property damage which could lead to suspension or expulsion) and other
severe behavior problems that are pervasive and are maladaptive and
require a systematic and frequent application of behavioral interventions.
Training in the use of emergency behavioral intervention.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Designs
systematic procedures that result in lasting positive changes in
individual student behaviors.

Trains
staff in the design of behavioral emergency procedures and behavioral
intervention plans.

Pursues
updated information and training in behavioral analysis and positive
behavioral interventions.

Consults
with staff members and parents who are responsible for implementing
the behavioral intervention plan.

Adheres
to the frequency of consultations as prescribed in the behavioral
intervention plan.

Conducts
functional analysis assessments including information gathering from
three sources and systematic observations in accordance with the
Education Code.

Writes
primary reports in accordance with the Education Code.

Writes
feasible behavioral intervention plans as delineated in the Education
Code.

Participates
in, coordinate and/or chair IEP meetings as necessary.

Complies
with district and legal timelines.
-
Implements
and/or supervises the implementation of behavioral intervention plans
to replace specified maladaptive behavior(s) with alternative
acceptable behavior(s).

Develops
and implements behavioral intervention plans in a consistent manner
appropriate to the individual student's life settings.

Measures
program effectiveness at scheduled intervals determined by the IEP
team and makes modifications as necessary.

Collects
and maintains "Behavioral Emergency Report" data in
accordance with the Education Code.
