READING -- Word Analysis

Beginning

  • Recognize most common English morphemes in phrases and simple sentences. (e.g., basic syllabification rules, phonics).

Early Intermediate

  • Use common English morphemes in oral and silent reading.

  • Apply knowledge of common English morphemes in oral and silent reading to derive meaning from literature and texts in content areas.

  • Write expository compositions such as descriptions and compare/contrast, and problem/solution that include a main idea and some details using simple sentences.

Intermediate

  • Use basic strategies of note taking, outlining, and the writing process to structure drafts of simple essays, with consistent use of standard grammatical forms (some rules may not be evident).
  • Write brief expository compositions and reports (e.g., description, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and problem/solution) that include a thesis, support details, and quotations.
  • Write responses to selected literature that exhibit understanding of the text using detailed and transitional sentences.
