Luther Burbank High School, home of the Mighty Titans,
aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring
young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through
intercultural understanding and respect. We encourage our students to
become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.
As a result of
these goals, we offer seven small learning communities— Medical and
Health Sciences, Social and Criminal Justice, Information Technology,
Construction and Design, Public Science, Arts and Communication, and
International Environmental Studies. These small learning communities
offer both college preparatory and career pathways courses. Students,
parents, and teachers share a unique opportunity to discuss long-term
goals and better prepare students to graduate from high school and
enroll in a college, university, or a vocational program.
Our school has
shown multiple years of improvement on standardized tests due to a
dedicated staff, involved parents, and hard-working students. Our
success was also made possible because each small learning community
offers math and English block classes for ninth grade students. Our
students’ literacy rates have shown improvement when they participate in
the ninth grade Academic Reading and Writing classes.
To meet the needs
of our diverse community, Luther Burbank High School offers the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, the Advanced Diploma, and
IB Honors Certificates. Highly motivated students may apply for the IB
Diploma Program, which is currently offered in the International
Environmental Studies small learning community. Other small learning
communities offer IB classes of similar equivalence. Currently IB math
classes are offered in various small learning communities to initiate a
school wide International Baccalaureate program.
Along with an IB
program, we have a multilingual department which is committed to
matriculating all English language learners into a college, university
or a vocational program. The multilingual office provides support in
Spanish and Hmong. Parent meetings, such as ELAC, and
parent/teacher/student conferences are examples of services coordinated
through the office. Registration, student placement, and academic
performance monitoring of EL learners are coordinated through the
Multilingual Office.
he Multilingual
Office provides translation and interpretation in many campus situations
and occasions. Classroom teachers and students are provided primary
language support through the Peer Tutor Program managed in the
Multilingual Office.
In addition to
these remarkable programs, Luther Burbank High School offers an award
winning NJROTC program. The program centers on building personal pride,
integrity, and responsibility. Our caring instructors prepare students
for ROTC boot camp, marching, drill team competition, parade
participation, and uniform inspection. There are great opportunities for
parents to become involved through volunteering, guest speaking,
community service partnerships, Parent Council and our newly awaited
Parent University.
As one of the most diverse schools in the United States, the staff and
administration of Luther Burbank High School look forward to meeting
your son or daughters’ unique educational goals. |
