We
believe that learning should be active and relevant, with the school
providing abundant opportunities for students to excel. Because our
students possess a wide range of abilities and talents, they are nurtured
while being encouraged to take full advantage of a varied and demanding
scholastic program that is designed to challenge and support each student.
As we enter the 21st
century, our ideals will continue to be high academic standards, active
learning, and innovative and inspired teaching. We will continue to work
with parents and the community – including civic groups and business
partners – to strengthen a tradition of support for scholastic success.
The primary focus
areas are:
-
95% Attendance Rate
-
High Academic Standards and Achievement
-
Parent Involvement
-
Community Support and Involvement
All students are
part of one of Eight Small Learning Communities. Application for open
enrollment should be made to a specific Small Learning Community. In
addition to required classes, all 9th and 10th grade
students must pass a minimum one-semester computer literacy course. All 11th
and 12th grade students specialize in either college
prep, advanced technical preparations, or career entry courses.
Many Hiram Johnson
High School students eagerly participate in one or more of the following
select programs: Corporate Academy, Apple One to One Lap Top Program, Air
Force Junior ROTC, Academy of Criminal Justice, Aviation/Transportation
Academy, and Regional Occupation Programs (ROP). The school also has
programs for Special Education and GATE students. Business and industrial
support for Hiram Johnson is extensive and includes the Franchise Tax
Board, EDD, Wells Fargo Bank, Home Depot, Ralphs Grocery Company, and the
Sacramento Kings.
Instruction is
provided to all students in a college-like atmosphere. Classes adhere to a
modular schedule in which students attend all six classes on Mondays. For
the remainder of the week, classes meet every other day in three
111-minute modules rather than the traditional six 55-minute periods. This
schedule allows for teachers to use a variety of teaching methods and
strategies to meet the diverse learning style of students and it provides
time for individualized instruction.
Despite the many improvements that have taken place, the challenges
continue to be improving student performance on standardized tests and
maximizing each student’s potential by providing a supportive and
comprehensive educational program. |
