Recently awarded grants:

A school/community collaborative at Hiram
Johnson High School and Will C. Wood Middle School, led by the
on-site Healthy Start Program, recently secured School Community
Violence Prevention funding from the California Department of Education
and the Attorney General's Office. The five-year, $100,000 per year grant
will focus on 7th - 9th graders to reduce gang involvement and campus
fighting. Activities include: implementation of a peer mediation program
entitled "Teaching Students to be Peacemakers," implementation of Second
Step curriculum, family strengthening and parent education programs, life
skills training for youth, mentoring and tutoring, and increased
collaboration with law enforcement. For more information, contact: Mary

- On May 27, 2005, Hubert Bancroft Elementary School was awarded an $
18,500 grant from Project Fitness America to provide them with permanent
outdoor fitness equipment and a cardiovascular fitness curriculum.
Sutter Medical Center helped sponsor the site's application to this
foundation, and support letters came from the PTA, from Boy Scout Troop
