Sutter debaters capture top prizes at national championship
For the eighth year in a row, the Sutter Middle School debate team participated in the Middle School Public Debate Program National Championships.
Sutter has been part of this event longer than any other school in all of Northern California, and once again the team performed at a high level.
Ninety teams (270 students) from around the country competed and Sutter debaters came home with some of the top prizes. The team of Della Mahoney, Olivia Sison, and Elizabeth Fugit narrowly missed debating in the final public debate for the championship, taking eighth place overall as a team.
Samantha Macriss, a seventh grader, placed second overall in the individual placing. The team enjoyed competing against kids from places like New York, Washington, D.C., Seattle and Southern California.
The team is now preparing for the coveted NorCal Cup. This debate championship will take place at Churchill Middle School on May 11.
