Secretary of State Padilla, Board Member Hansen drop by The Met’s voter registration drive
Secretary of State Alex Padilla and SCUSD Board Member Jay Hansen dropped by The Met Sacramento High School’s voter registration drive on Monday.
The drive was organized by Met students Shyanne Fair, 17 and Zelia Gonzales, 16, to raise awareness of a new law that allows 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote. The law, SB 113, became effective January 1.
Fair says Hansen approached her with an idea for getting more young people to register and vote. She and Gonzales then put together a student survey to find out what teens already know about the democratic process.
Based on the survey results, the teens worked with Sacramento County Registrar Jill Lavine to pilot a registration day at The Met. “We wanted to have an end result,” says Gonzales. “We wanted students to go home with a slip showing that they’re registered.”
Fair and Gonzales also plan to create curriculum on voter registration for use at The Met and other SCUSD schools.
“If we train students on how to register and how to vote there will be an increase in participation in elections,” says Fair.
