School will start next fall on Thursday, September 1 – the Thursday before Labor Day.

SCUSD’s Board of Education approved the 2016-17 school year calendar at its meeting on December 10. The vote followed the Board’s commitment to making a decision before Winter Break to give families ample time to plan their summer vacation schedules.

The district considered moving up the start of school two weeks to August 18, which would make SCUSD more competitive in new teacher recruitment, among other benefits. The change would have also allowed SCUSD to end the first semester for high school before Winter Break.

“I want to thank all of our parents, guardians, students and staff that participated in our engagement efforts on this issue,” said Superintendent José L. Banda. “We received valuable feedback that will inform our work ahead as we look to the 2017-18 calendar and beyond.”
