SAVE THE DATE: District, Sac State host Social-Emotional Learning summit on Feb. 13
SCUSD and Sacramento State are hosting a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) summit on February 13 featuring comedic storyteller Jack Gallagher.
“The Power of Relationships” will feature a light breakfast, speakers and a roundtable discussion of ways the community can work together to make schools safer, healthier and kinder places for students to learn.
SEL is a growing movement in education in which students are explicitly taught skills like impulse control and empathy. By learning how to self-manage and get along socially, classrooms become safe and managed and teachers can prompt kids to take the kind of learning risks necessary to grasp difficult concepts.
SCUSD was an early area leader in both SEL and bullying prevention. Sacramento City was the first district in the region to pass a tough anti-bullying policy and to dedicate resources to a full-time Bullying Prevention Specialist.
Three years ago, SCUSD received a $750,000 grant from the NoVo Foundation to implement SEL in classrooms. Teachers use a research-proven curriculum to help children master such life skills as responsible decision-making and self-awareness.
