Parents: Learn about Common Core, online tests at workshop series

e-Connections Post

A new round of Common Core State Standards Parent Workshops begins March 11 and will continue through April 29 at various schools around the district.

Standards define what students should know and be able to do at every grade level. The workshops will provide parents with insight into the new standards, which are designed to prepare every student for college and careers.

Because Common Core standards focus on skills in addition to content, they are more challenging for students. Skills emphasized include problem solving, academic writing, close or analytic reading and critical thinking.

At SCUSD’s workshops, parents will also learn how to support their children at home as their classrooms transition to this new model of education.

This new round of workshops will also focus on the new computer-based Smarter Balanced tests that will be field tested in classrooms across California this spring. The tests are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and replace the California Standards Tests (CSTs). Click here to learn more.
