The Parent Teacher Home Visit Project (PTHVP), a nonprofit SCUSD partner founded in Sacramento, is the recipient of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) 2014 Golden Bell Award.

PTHVP trains educators to make voluntary home visits to the families of their students. The PTHVP model helps both teachers and parents become more effective in supporting their students’ learning.

Lisa Levasseur, Sacramento Project Director of PTHVP, and representatives from SCUSD, Sacramento City Teachers Association and ACT, a community organizing group, accepted the award on Tuesday, December 16 at a luncheon ceremony at the San Francisco Westin Hotel.

The CSBA evaluation that led to the award included an on-site validation process and focused on PTHVP’s two-part method of engaging families. First, the teacher does a visit at home, focusing on building a relationship with the family and learning about the child. Second, the teacher invites the family to school events and connects with them as to their child’s academic strengths and challenges.
