Oak Ridge hosts first-ever Family Science Night

e-Connections Post

Oak Ridge Elementary School hosted its first-ever Family Science Night on May 7.

With help from City Year and Powerhouse Science Center, students and their families enjoyed fun and interactive presentations from local scientists, professional researchers and university students.

At this event, scientists not only entertained students and families, but also helped them gain an appreciation of how science works. Presentations covered topics such as pollution, nutrition and ecology. All presentations allowed students to physically participate in a science activity.

The event was made possible by Portal to the Public, a national program that gives communities the rare opportunity to interact with real scientists.

Oak Ridge’s program was the first of its kind and planners hope to eventually replicate the successful evening at other City Year sites across the country.
