“Lady Bird” Director Greta Gerwig Graduated From Sac City Unified Schools

e-Connections Post Phoebe Hearst Sutter

Add “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig to the growing list of remarkable students to graduate from Sacramento City Unified Schools. From yesterday’s Sacramento Bee:

“Gerwig, 34, grew up in the River Park neighborhood of Sacramento and attended school at three high-achieving East Sacramento campuses: Phoebe Hearst Elementary, Sutter Middle School and St. Francis. After graduating, she left for Barnard College in New York.”

Our district is proud of Ms. Gerwig’s accomplishments and wishes her much success as she prepares for the Oscars, where Lady Bird is nominated for five awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role and Original Screenplay.

It is worth noting that only five women, including Gerwig, have been nominated for a best director Oscar — Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”), Jane Campion (“The Piano”), Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”). Bigelow is the only woman to win best director in the 90-year history of the Academy Awards.
