Health Professions High School junior Christina Mendoza directed and wrote the play performed by the school’s drama club this month.

An avid fan of Edgar Allan Poe, Mendoza combined the poems “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” with the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” to create a thriller.

Mendoza says her goal is to be a Hollywood screenwriter. Her play, performed April 17, featured characters from Poe’s works and classic lines from the source material.

“Montressor, Fortunado and Annabel Lee came alive on the stage as the cast acted out Poe’s stories using Christina’s script,” says Principal Marla Johnson. “The audience loved it and gave her a standing ovation. Her first attempt was a splendid success and Christina is on her way to fame as America’s newest playwright.”
