Thanks to the hard work of dedicated teachers, parents and tournament volunteers, the year is off to a great start for SCUSD schools participating in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a robotics program for grades 5 through 8.

Last year, the district fielded seven FLL teams. This year, there are 17.

At a tournament on November 24 at John F. Kennedy High School — directed by JFK’s robotics coach Robert Greene — the Martin Luther King Jr. K-8 School “Solar Flares” earned the Project Presentation award and moved forward to regional competition, along with Will C. Wood Middle School’s “Spartan League.”

At a tournament at St. Francis High School, Caleb Greenwood’s Circuit Breakerz, under the direction of Coach Kelly Cordero, won the “Core Values” award for teamwork, creativity and positive attitudes.
