Employee Spotlight: Shannon Smith is First Participant in New Teacher Credential Program

e-Connections Post

We are proud to share that team member Shannon Smith, who works in our district’s accounting department, is the first team member on track to graduate from a new teaching credential program that allows classified district employees to obtain their teaching credential while working for the district.

The California Classified School Employee Teacher Credentialing Program is targeted at classified employees in school districts across the state. The program helps provide financial assistance as well as guaranteed employment in a credentialed position upon completion of the program. The program has two tiers–Tier 1 for classified employees who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree and a teaching credential and; Tier 2 for classified employees who have a bachelor’s degree and want to obtain a teaching credential.

The district was proactive in pursuing a grant under this new program and upon launching it in our school district, classified employees with an interest in teaching were reached out to. Participants were selected based on recommendations from their supervisor as well as their performance at an interview. Now that Shannon is on track for obtaining her teaching credential, she will begin teaching in our classrooms starting in August 2018.

Congratulations to Shannon on your ongoing dedication to our students and families! To learn more about this innovative new program, please visit this website.
