K thru 12th grade Oratorical Competition
    

 

2002 Theme: PATIENCE AND PEACE BEGINS WITH ME

Requirements, Rules and more…

All school sites are encouraged to participate in this Oratorical Competition.

Oral presentations should demonstrate oral expression with emphasis on rhythm, repetition, rhyming, voice tones, stress, mood, and meaning.

Performing Arts and Artwork presentations should demonstrate emphasis to the theme in tone, mood and meaning adhering to that theme.

All PreK-12 grade students are eligible to compete individually or in groups of no more than five students only once per category. Groups/pairs will be judged as one act. Therefore, students are encouraged to participate as individuals.

Participants must adhere to the time limit or 10 points from overall score will be deducted.

Contestants are not allowed to use props, notes, paper or index cards during their performance.

The use of rap in any presentation must be pre-approved by this office.

Special Education students may compete with the general education students or special education students based upon the discretion of the teacher.

Gospel choirs, special circumstances, etc. must contact this office for details.

Each performance/piece must be self introduced with self/group name, school site, grade level, name of piece and why it was chosen. This must be spoken in Professional English.

Awards:

All students participating will receive a certificate of appreciation.

Each participating school site will receive a certificate of participation.

Each site volunteer site coordinator will receive a certificate of participation.

Students may only compete in one category per grade level segment: PreK-K, 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12, dependent on number of entries, some segments will be combined as needed.

Each first, second and third place winning entry will receive a trophy, medallion or ribbon. A ribbon is awarded, if there is only one entry in any given category, per grade segment. Each school may secure additional trophies, medallions and ribbons for group participants, if desired.

Judging

Judges are given information guidelines regarding the judging process prior to judging the contest. School site staff or affiliates are not permitted to judge when their own students/children are competing.

There are designated score sheets for each category listed: Poetry/Speeches, Folktales/Original, Performing Arts and Artwork.

The Coordinator has the final word on entry order, segment groupings, appropriateness of pieces, tie –breakers, etc. Please refer all inquiries to the Coordinator of the event.

Follow-Up

During the Public Schools Month the overall 1-3rd place school sites (primary/intermediate) will receive a plaque; the students and principal should be present to receive this award at the May 2002 Board Meeting.

  • Poetry/Speeches: Materials written by someone other than the participant (PreK-12th grade)
  • Storytelling; Multicultural Folktales (grades 3-12)
  • Original: Poetry/Speeches written by participant (grades 3-12) based on the theme.
  • Performing Arts: Group or Individual (grades 3-12) based on the theme.
  • Artwork: Group or individual entry (grades PreK-12) based on the theme.
