12/19/05 Sac City Unified conducts first committee meeting on how
to make best use of small elementary schools A committee of 11
parents, community members and Sacramento City Unified School
District teachers and other staff will meet on Monday, Dec. 19 from
5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the district’s Serna Center to review data and
make recommendations on how effectively to use elementary schools
while ensuring quality learning environments.

12/16/05 City schools board of education elects new officers
Sacramento City Unified School District President Roy Grimes and
First Vice President Manny Hernandez were re-elected to their
positions by fellow board members on Thursday, Dec. 15 during the
group’s annual reorganization.

12/14/05 One third of city elementary schools eligible for state
Distinguished School status; principals honored. Sacramento
City Unified School District Superintendent M. Magdalena Carrillo
Mejia and other district officials will congratulate 21 elementary
school principals eligible to apply for Distinguished School status
on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. in the District’s Serna Center. The
Serna Center is located at 5735 47th Ave.

11/4/05 McClatchy students reject most ballot measures today
C.K. McClatchy High School seniors voiced their opinions on
California’s Special Election ballot measures today and rejected
Propositions 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 80. They supported both
pharmaceutical measures, Propositions 78 (by two votes) and
Proposition 79. Students had spent weeks reviewing and studying the
measures.

11/3/05 McClatchy High students to vote on ballot initiatives C.K.
McClatchy High School seniors will voice their opinions on
California’s Special Election ballot measures on Thursday, November
3. Approximately 500 students will vote in a mock election conducted
by the Sacramento County Elections Office and school officials.
Voting will start at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. in the
school’s auditorium. McClatchy is located at 3066 Freeport Blvd.

bring country living to Sac City schools
Pigs, chickens, horses and cows will make themselves at home at
Tahoe Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 2 as volunteers from the
Sacramento County 4H Club Council turn the campus into a barnyard
for the day. Classes will take turns visiting with the animals from
9:30 a.m. – Noon. Tahoe is located at 3110 60th St.

Schools work to give vandals only ghost of a chance at Halloween
mischief, extra patrols and community assistance used to ward off
trouble Sacramento City Unified School District officials will
add three additional officers to ward off potential vandals over the
Halloween weekend as they did last year. The extra officers will
start Saturday, Oct. 29, and work through Halloween night, Monday,
Oct. 31. Sac City usually has one officer on weekend patrol duty.

study school celebrates grand opening of permanent facility.
Local churches, businesses and neighborhood groups have been invited
to participate in the grand opening celebration for Capital City
School, an independent study campus for Sacramento City Unified
School District K-12 students.
The event begins at 11 a.m. with speeches by alumni and current
students. Capital City is located at 7222 24th St.

celebrate Red Ribbon Week Sacramento City Unified School
District students will be joined by Assemblymember Dave Jones,
representatives from the state Department of Justice, high school
drill and dance teams, and the Omax Pi Puppet Theater in the annual
anti-drug week kick off at Jedediah Smith Elementary School on
Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 9:15 a.m.
Jedediah Smith is located at 401 McClatchy Way.

Approximately 100 parents will learn tools for creating effective
school site councils on their child’s campus at a workshop on
Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Sacramento City
Unified School District’s Serna Center, located at 5735 47th
Ave.

9/29/05 Elementary schools join national fitness network
Students at Alice Birney and Hubert H. Bancroft elementary
schools will kickoff their participation in Project Fit America, a
national program aimed at improving physical fitness in children, on
Thursday, Sept. 29. Each school received funding from Project Fit
and Sutter Health for outdoor fitness training equipment, staff
training and physical education curriculum materials.

enjoyed steep drop in summer vandalism costs
The amount of money spent repairing broken windows,
graffiti-splattered walls and trashed classrooms on Sacramento City
Unified School District campuses fell by 67 percent during the
usually active summer months, district security and maintenance
officials reported.

New Health Professions High School
students examine regional job opportunities at Shriners.
One hundred and forty freshmen students will fan out across
Sacramento today as they prepare to be the first class of a new
small high school to be built at 451 McClatchy Way aimed at
preparing them for health care careers. The school, opening on Sept.
6, will start

examine career prognosis at Shriners Hospital Wednesday.
Freshmen students at the new Health Professions High School are
already learning about possible careers in the medical field, even
before the start of school on Sept. 6. Approximately 60 students
will tour the Shriners Hospital for Children
Northern California on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 12
noon.

international business management certification, joining eight other
U.S. districts.
Sacramento City Unified School District will be named
Thursday morning only the ninth school system in the country to earn
a coveted international business management certification earned by
industry giants such as Microsoft Corp., Fugifilm and Proctor and
Gamble.

City schools names new financial officer Sacramento City Unified
School District Superintendent M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia
announced the appointment of Tom Barentson as the district’s new
Deputy Superintendent/CFO. He assumed his new post on July 1.

schools ask neighbors’ help to combat summer vandalism
Pacific Elementary School staff, led by Sacramento City Unified
School District’s police sergeant, will walk door-to-door from the
school parking lot to ask neighbors for their help in preventing
arson, burglaries and vandalism over the summer vacation period.
The knock-and-talk effort will begin Monday, June 27 at 10 a.m.

From the time Dylan Glover entered kindergarten at Camellia Basic
School in 1992, going to class has been his priority. Illness could
wait until weekends and holidays. He could rest when school ended.
When Glover, 17, graduates from high school on Friday afternoon, he
will have accumulated perfect attendance for all 13 years of his
academic career.

retiree, 66, on Route 66 to raise funds for Yolo County Habitat for
Humanity
Sac City Unified retiree Doug Waterman, 66, will bike solo on
the famed Route 66 from Santa Monica, CA to Chicago, IL. after
leaving from Davis on Wednesday, April 27 to benefit Habitat for
Humanity of Yolo County. He will begin his bicycle trip from along
the ocean in Santa Monica.

Spring into Health’ campaign kicks off at school
A.M.
Winn elementary school students will learn how to spring, jump, run
and eat their better way to better health starting Thursday, April
21 as part of a collaborative effort to provide youngsters with
nutrition and physical activity opportunities tied to curriculum
standards. Students will also enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables
with a “Harvest of the Month” taste test featuring kiwis and
strawberries.

Five middle and high schools join
192 campuses selected as California Distinguished Schools.
Five of the nine Sacramento County schools honored as a
California Distinguished School are Sacramento City Unified School
District sites, state officials announced yesterday. C.K. McClatchy
and John F. Kennedy high schools and Sutter, Sam Brannan and Albert
Einstein middle schools are five of 192 sites recognized for
academic performance after a rigorous selection process conducted by
the California State Department of Education.
