Cal Middle students argue their way to second place in national
debate contest
Students from California Middle School recently won second place at
the sixth annual National Middle School Public Debate Program
Championship held at Claremont McKenna College. The three-person
team of John "Jack" Gugino, John Spurlock and Kao Ye Thao argued
their way to a 5-1 record, their only loss coming to the
Harvard-Westlake School of Los Angeles in the final round. |

comprehensive sites—some with enrollments of 2,700; 2,600 or
2,400—or they might attend one of two alternative programs. They
were graduating at a rate of slightly more than 76 percent. First
time passage rate for 10th graders of the California High
School Exit Exam English Language Arts and math was 68 percent in
2003.

Bee ice cream social. Häagen-Dazs recently funded research at UC
Davis and Penn State University to find out why honey bees,
responsible for one-third of the foods Americans eat, are
disappearing at an alarming rate.

school districts in Sacramento County will learn effective
strategies for engaging parents to increase the academic success of

conference will be conducted at the Sacramento City Unified School

2/22/08 Three meetings scheduled to gather input for new high school
in former Sacramento High attendance area Sacramento City
Unified School District will conduct three community meetings to
outline and discuss the plan for opening a new high school (“consent
decree” school) at the former Marian Anderson Elementary School
campus. The school will be a 9-12, college preparatory high school.
It is scheduled to open in September 2008 with a 9th

Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education members

Board members re-elected Manny Hernandez as their president. Karen

positions for one year.

11/29/07 Two Sac City schools nominated for national Blue Ribbon
Award Two Sac City schools are among 35 selected as the state’s
nominees to the 2008 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Blue Ribbon Schools
Program, the California Department of Education announced recently.
West Campus High School and Golden Empire Elementary School are the
only two schools in Sacramento County nominated for the award.

weekend to benefit special ed programs Leonardo da Vinci K-8
School will conduct its second annual e-waste collection effort to
benefit its special education classes and enrichment programs on
Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each
day. The collection will occur in the back parking lot of the campus
located at 4701 Joaquin Way. Collection will occur “rain or shine.”

civil rights movement’ Students, community members, school and
district officials will celebrate the renaming of the former C.M.
Goethe Middle School to Rosa Parks, civil rights activist and

on local campuses during Halloween Sacramento City Unified
School District officials want to ensure there are more treats than
tricks at local schools this Halloween. District security will add
three officers to its nightly patrol for the All Hallows Eve

persevered despite obstacles Forty members of the Class of 2007
who lacked credits or other graduation requirement last June will
still experience the pride and joy of high school graduation with
their families on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. They will walk
across the stage, having completed all requirements to receive a
high school diploma such as passing the high school exit exam or
completing senior projects. Sacramento City Unified School District
(SCUSD) will conduct its special ceremony for these students at the
Charles A. Jones Skills Center.

they buck state, U.S. trend Ford Motor Company Fund and
Community Services, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company,
will bestow its highest education accolade on the Sacramento City
Unified School District (SCUSD) and its Career and Technical
Preparation Department on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. in the
Luther Burbank High School library. Sac City will also receive a
$30,000 grant and technical assistance from a team of leading
experts in workforce development. The designation as a Ford Career

Camellia Elementary School kindergartners will show volunteer Keith
Rosenberg that giving more than 1,000 hours of service can be sweet
as approximately 100 students from five kindergarten classes
recognize his 61st birthday and treat him to birthday
cake. Rosenberg started volunteering at the school because his
granddaughter, Rochelle Brown attended the campus. This year, she
has moved on to Sutter Middle School

Community input sought on Kennedy High theater project
John F. Kennedy High School will host a community forum to discuss
its proposed theater on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at 6 p.m. in the
school library. Community members are asked to bring questions,
comments and suggestions.
Construction on the proposed 500-seat performing arts building is
expected to begin in June 2008 and be completed by September 2009.

small high school holds “hand-on” summer bridge day camp. In
preparation for the opening of Sacramento City Unified School
District’s newest small high school, the School of
Engineering and Sciences (SES), the school will be holding a summer
bridge day camp August 21-23. This “hands-on”
experience will include building solar cell cars, “Mad Science
Demonstrations,” and visits to the Challenger Museum and the
Aerospace Museum. |

superintendent selects city schools leader to attend prestigious
national academy State school chief Jack O’Connell has named
Dr. M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia, Sacramento City Unified School
District superintendent, as one of two California educators to
attend the select 2007 National Academy for Superintendents at Ohio
State University. In its 24th year, the academy invites
each chief state schools officer to nominate one or two outstanding
superintendents to apply for participation. Enrollment is limited to
45. The theme of this year’s program is “Leadership in the 21st
Century: An Examination of the Future of High Schools.” |

conducts recruitment fair across from new school site America’s
Choice High School will conduct a recruitment fair and informational
meeting about the new campus on Saturday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 1
p.m. at the Rancho Cordova Senior Center, 3480 Routier Rd. at
Systems Parkway.
Staff members will be available to answer questions
about the program and enroll students. The meeting will be held
across the street from the new campus site. The small high school
will limit enrollment to 500 students.

Neighbors asked to watch schools to prevent fires, vandalism during
July 4 holiday Sacramento City Unified School District
officials are asking community members to keep a close eye on
neighborhood schools this 4th of July to help prevent
costly fires and vandalism to local campuses. The Independence Day
celebration is a particularly dangerous time because of the greater
risk of fire and arson resulting from careless or malicious use of
fireworks. The district normally spends thousands of dollars after
the July 4 holiday to clean up and repair the damage done by vandals
and fireworks.

6/21/07 City schools outperform county, state on tougher annual
English proficiency assessment Results from the 2006-07
California English Language Learner Development Test (CELDT) reveal
Sacramento City Unified School District English learners
outperformed their peers at the county and state levels in the
percent of students performing at the advanced and early advanced
level. It is important to note that the annual state assessment to
measure English proficiency was revised and made more rigorous to
better reflect the state’s English Language Development standards.
This year’s summary results cannot be compared with any previous
results.

and debate tournament Two students each from John F. Kennedy

6/8/07 Will C. Wood student reads 7 million words, helps school
celebrate literacy at end-of-year celebration Nhi Vo has
obliterated the school reading record she set last year. As a
seventh grader at Will C. Wood Middle School, Nhi read more than 4
million words, which quadruples the state’s reading standards. This
year, as an eighth grader, Nhi has devoured enough books to top the
7 million word mark.

the news conference along with two counselors from the high school
the student will attend next fall.

First graduation class for innovative small high school crowned with
100 percent success Twenty-five Met small high school seniors
will walk across the stage in Land Park today at 10 a.m. Another
senior is already attending college classes and cannot attend his
high school graduation ceremony. The stage is located just north of
Fairy Tale Town.

6/2/07 School vies for WNBA ‘Court of Dreams’ prize; send 900 to
Saturday Monarchs game Hoping to win a Reading and Learning
center for their school and cheer the Sacramento Monarchs in their
game against the Los Angeles Sparks, approximately 900 Oak Ridge
Elementary School students, family members and supporters will leave
the campus by bus on Saturday, June 2 and travel to ARCO Arena. The
game will start at 7 p.m. All Monarchs game tickets were purchased
as part of the WNBA’s Court of Dreams Contest and donated to Oak
Ridge students and families.

6/1/07 Sac City to continue visual/performing arts option for
students in 2007-2008 school year Sacramento City Unified School
District Board President Manny Hernandez announced today the
District will continue to offer students a visual and performing
arts program in the fall. Notification was given by the Visual and
Performing Arts Charter (VAPAC) governing board that it intends to
close VAPAC at the end of the 2006-2007 school year.

City Unified School District is hosting two public budget forums on
Tuesday, May 22 at C.M. Goethe Middle School and Wednesday, May 23
at Fruit Ridge Elementary School. Both meetings are scheduled from 6
p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
District budget staff will share information about the 2007-08
projected budget and seek receive input from the community.

When Hiram Johnson High School students wanted a way to boost school
spirit, they decided a school carnival would be just the ticket, so
Monday night from 6:30 to 8, after months of planning, they’ll see
the campus dotted with food booths, a barbecue, tricycle races, face
painting and other traditional carnival activities.

billion state funding to reduce class size, boost instruction, staff
training Twelve
Sacramento City Unified School District schools are among the sites
selected for funding approval under the $2.7 billion state Quality
Education Investment Act (QEIA) aimed at improving student
performance in struggling schools. Selected sites are Luther Burbank
and Hiram Johnson High Schools, C.M. Goethe Middle School, Fruit
Ridge, Edward Kemble, John Still, John Sloat, Ethel Phillips,
Freeport, Mark Twain, Tahoe and Pacific Elementary Schools.

3/7/07 Kennedy senior scores perfect 36 on ACT college entrance
exam; is only 1 of 26 in U.S. John F. Kennedy High School senior
Lyndsie Harris, 18, didn’t realize what she had done and didn’t let
anyone know her ACT college entrance exam score except for her
parents. It wasn’t until she received a follow up letter from ACT
that she realized that she was only one of five California students
and one of 26 U.S. students to achieve a perfect ACT score of 36.

March 2nd Cal Grant deadline.
The California Student Aid Commission Cal Grant initiative continues

support leader Sacramento
City Unified School District officials have hired Manuel Guillot, a
former organizer and civil rights activist as the new Director,
Parent Support Services.
Superintendent M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia said Guillot will be a
good fit in the highly diverse district. “He brings valuable
experience that will serve our families well as we seek to engage
all families in the education of their children,” Mejia said.

School Students Investigated This press release is being issued
jointly between the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento
Unified School District.
On Wednesday, January 24, 2007, the Sacramento Police Department
notified McClatchy High School administrators of a potential threat
against the campus. An unidentified source told police that they
overheard two McClatchy students discussing “school security” and
potential “escape routes.” |
