6/19/2009 Elementary, middle school recreation, enrichment programs
offered at canceled summer school sites
Sacramento City Unified School District is offering students
free summer recreation and enrichment programs in partnership with
its after school providers at 19 sites where summer school was
canceled this month.

6/15/2009 Neighbors asked to watch over schools during summer break
to prevent vandalism Parents, students and staff of Ethel I.
Baker Elementary School will join Sacramento City Unified School
District (SCUSD) police officers on Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m. in a
door-to -door canvass of the surrounding neighborhood in an effort
to keep their campus free from costly vandalism this summer.

6/12/09 Sacramento City Unified reduces summer school offerings
due to ongoing state budget crisis The Sacramento City Unified
School District Board of Education voted Thursday evening to reduce
summer school offerings because of additional state budget cuts to
education. Approximately 5,500 K-8 students will be affected.
District officials expect to save approximately $1.9 million. |
5/22/09 Kindergarten, middle school educators named city schools’
top teachers Christy Fung, a kindergarten teacher at Freeport
Elementary School, and Margaret (Peggy) Green, a language arts and
world history teacher at Sam Brannan Middle School, have been
selected as the city schools’ Teachers of the Year, district
officials announced this week

District board seeks public comment about desired traits of new city
schools superintendent
The Board of Education invites the public to an open forum for
community members and stakeholders to provide input into what
characteristics should be considered in the hiring of a new
superintendent.

5/13/09 Sac City Unified middle and high school students ‘open’
documentary series at Crest Theater Middle and high school
students from 14 Sacramento City Unified campuses will showcase
their short films of community leaders and issues in their community
on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at the Crest Theater, 1013 K St. The
premiere is free to the public.

4/23/09 City high schools launch next level of high school redesign
by combining college and career preparations State Senate pro
Tem Darrell Steinberg will join Sacramento City Unified School
District President Roy Grimes, Interim Superintendent Susan Miller,
educators, city leaders and students as Sacramento schools kick off
the next step in the system’s high school redesign—combining college
and career preparation for every student—at 8:30 a.m. on Friday,
April 24 at the Serna Center. The Center is located at 5735 47th
Ave. near Stockton Blvd.

4/22/09 2,000 parents and children expected at day-long city
schools’ family festival of learning and fun. Fun and learning
will be combined in a free day-long event for parents and children
at the annual Sacramento City Unified School District “Passport to
Success” Family Festival on Saturday, April 25 at the Serna Center
located at 5735 47th Ave. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

since legendary UFW founder’s passing Students at Sacramento
high schools will observe the 16th anniversary of the passing of
farm labor and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez on Thursday by
hearing Anthony Chavez, 23, speak about his grandfather’s message of
nonviolence and self-sacrifice

than 70 trees to be planted at school named after famous botanist
and social activist. George Washington Carver School of Arts and
Science and the Tree Foundation will plant over 70 trees, donated by
the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) at
the new high school campus on Monday, April 20 from 9:15 a.m. to
3:30 p.m.

4/2/09 - Little Rock Nine member featured at African-American
leadership conference Terrence J. Roberts, Ph.D, one of the
Little Rock Nine who courageously integrated Central High School in
Little Rock, Ark. in 1957, will deliver the afternoon address at the
city schools’ African-American Parent/Student Leadership Conference
on Thursday, April 2 at California State University, Sacramento.

Area school districts to meet and determine common ground in seeking
federal stimulus funds Sacramento City Unified School
District (SCUSD) officials believe unity and collaboration can
increase local chances of gaining greater federal stimulus funding
for regional school systems. SCUSD has asked area education leaders
attend a meeting on Tuesday, March 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
at the district headquarters on how programs and services might be
combined or redesigned to increase chances of funding.

3/30/09 Sacramento City Unified School Community meetings scheduled
at five schools considered for closure Meetings to share
information about potential closures have been scheduled at five
Sacramento City Unified School District campuses beginning
Wednesday, April 1 at Genesis High School and continuing through
April 15 at Alice Birney Elementary School. All meetings are
scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Other meetings include Thomas
Jefferson, Mark Hopkins and Lisbon elementary schools.

3/30/09 Search for city schools’ chief meeting timeline; board
president Grimes outlines process Sacramento City Unified School
District (SCUSD) Board of Education President Roy Grimes, MPA, MBA
today announced that the process outlined in January to hire a
permanent superintendent is on track. Interim Superintendent Susan
Miller was hired last July to serve for one year following the
retirement of former Superintendent M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia,
Ph.D.

performance More than 100 of the city school’s best and
brightest young voices will sing an assortment of tunes during the
2009 Festival of Music at C.K. McClatchy High School on Wednesday,

public
Sacramento City Unified School District officials announced four
more community meetings to seek public input regarding how best to
use its facilities. The remaining meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. at the following locations:
• Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Maple
Elementary; 3301 37th Ave.
• Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Martin Luther King, Jr. K-8; 480 Little

sites in school district’s south, central and east areas Alice
Birney Elementary, Will C. Wood Middle and Thomas Jefferson
Elementary schools will host community meetings next week to help
Sacramento City Unified School District gather public input on how
best to use its campuses and other facilities. Meetings are
scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26 (Alice Birney),
Tuesday, Jan. 27 (Will C. Wood) and Wednesday, Jan. 28 (Thomas

Kennedy High and Washington Elementary campuses Community
meetings seeking public input on how to best use Sacramento City
Unified School District campuses and other district
properties continue on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at John F. Kennedy High
(6715 Gloria Drive) and Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Washington Elementary
(520 18th St.) schools. Meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
at each campus. The meetings are part of 11 gatherings scheduled
across the district through Feb. 11.
