City schools swear in board members; elect new officers 12/17/04
Sacramento
City Unified School District newly elected board members Gerry
Houseman and Miguel Navarrette joined re-elected board members Rick
Jennings, Manny Hernandez and Karen Young on Thursday, Dec. 16 as
the governing board for the district.

Local business adopts
family recovering from fatal fire 12/16/04
Three Sacramento City Unified School District students who lost
their mother and an older sister to a house fire in Vietnam more
than two years ago will receive a special holiday surprise tomorrow,
when employees from Sherman-Loehr Custom Tile Works give their
family thousands of dollars worth of toys, clothes and gift
certificates.

Power failure repaired at John Still Elementary; students expected
for classes at 8 a.m. Friday morning 11/18/04
John Still Elementary School will be open tomorrow, Friday, Nov.
19 after failures of a circuit breaker and transformer shut down
electrical power today at the campus. Classes begin at 8 a.m. The

school students from throughout Northern California will descend on
Sam Brannan Middle School on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. with a
unique mission: find robotic solutions to difficulties faced by
disabled students in a school environment. |

School honors cherished after school coordinator

Fruit Ridge Elementary School students will remember a beloved after
school coordinator on Friday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. Students and staff
will pay tribute to Students Today Achieving Results for Tomorrow
(START) coordinator Lynda Fields who died unexpectedly on Sunday,
Oct. 31.
Pupils and colleagues will release
messages in balloons as part of their tribute to Fields, who served
the Fruit Ridge community for more than eight years as the START
coordinator.

officials in dedicating the campus located a 5601 47th
Ave.
Tours are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and dedication ceremonies will
begin at 6 p.m.

4H brings farm life to
Sac City schools 11/03/04
Pigs, chickens, horses and cows will make themselves at home at
Parkway Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 3 as volunteers from
the Sacramento County 4H Club Council turns the campus into a
barnyard for the day. Classes will take turns visiting with the
animals from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Parkway is located at 4720 Forest
Parkway. |

Students sell
baked goods to save the rainforest 11/02/04
Inspired by a reading assignment, fifth graders at Golden Empire
Elementary School are trying to save the rainforest one cookie at a
time.
For the second consecutive year, students will sell baked goods
after school in order to buy land in the ecologically sensitive
rainforest to turn over to indigenous people and save it from
development. The bake sale runs from Wednesday to Friday from 1:30
p.m. until 2:30 p.m |

Schools add extra patrols to spook vandals over Halloween weekend,
ask community for assistance 10/27/04
Three additional officers will keep a watchful eye on Sacramento
City Unified School District Schools over the Halloween weekend in
an effort to scare away vandals. The extra officers will start
Friday evening—Oct. 29—and work through Halloween night, Sunday,
Oct. 31. They will work around the clock. Sac City usually has one
officer on weekend patrol duty. |
Helicopter lands at elementary school as part of Red Ribbon Week
anti-drug message, Halloween safety

Special agents, including a police
dog, from the California Department of Justice, the Sacramento
Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will join
students at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at
9 a.m. to promote an anti-drug message followed by a helicopter
landing on the school field at 9:30 a.m.

Sac City, teachers reach early tentative pact

Negotiating teams for Sacramento City
Unified School District and the Sacramento City Teachers Association
(SCTA) have reached tentative agreement on a multi-year collective
bargaining agreement. District board of education members approved
the proposal on Thursday, Oct. 21. On Tuesday, SCTA’s executive
board will vote on whether to also consent to the tentative contract
that would run until 2007.

Burbank high begins elite college prep International Baccalaureate
program; only one other in Sacramento 10/20/04
Burbank High School students—where 62 percent qualify for free or
reduced lunch and approximately 80 percent are African American,
Latino, Asian or Pacific Islander—now have the opportunity to join
the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
School and Sacramento City Unified School District officials,
teachers and students will make the announcement Wednesday, Oct. 20
at 10 a.m. in the Burbank library. Burbank is located at 3500 Florin
Rd. (between Franklin Blvd. and 24th St.). |

California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) Chairman and
President of the California Business Roundtable Bill Hauck will join
Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Maggie
Carrillo Mejia on Monday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. to announce district
participation with Just for the Kids-California (JFTK-CA), an
education/business partnership aimed at improving school performance
and providing community accountability. |

Teens
meet with campaign reps, then vote in mock presidential election

California high school students will meet with staff of the
presidential campaigns of President George W. Bush and Sen. John
Kerry, and then vote in a mock election at a special LegiSchool
event, 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14. |
On Monday, October 11, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., Hiram Johnson High
School will conduct a “Table Top” exercise with the Sacramento
Police Department, the Sacramento City Fire Department, and school
officials regarding intruders on campus. The team will go
through an exercise involving a terrorist threat, and develop a plan
to resolve the situation using the Incident Command System (ICS).

dedicate the innovative New Technology High School tonight at 6:00
p.m. at 1400 Dickson St.

Hundreds of students seek admission, scholarships at fifth
Historically Black College Recruitment Fair 09/16/04
City schools’ juniors and seniors will seek admission, financial aid
information and actual scholarships from 37 black colleges on
Friday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Charles A. Jones
Skills Center during the fifth annual Historically Black College
Recruitment Fair. The fair is open to all students. |

Bidwell instructor named county
Teacher of the Year 09/09/04
A Sacramento City Unified School District educator was named a
Sacramento County Teacher of the Year for 2005 at an awards dinner
on Wednesday night.
Asa L. Salley, a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at
John Bidwell Elementary School, will be one of two teachers
representing Sacramento County in the statewide Teacher of the Year
competition after receiving the County Board of Education Award of
Merit. |

America’s Choice High School Moves to New Location 8/20/04
America’s Choice
High School will be starting its second year in a newly refurbished
building in Sacramento (9300 Tech Center Dr.). The new campus
will still be conveniently located near US Highway 50 and the
“Tiber” light rail station. The larger space will allow more
students to enroll and experience an excellent, college-prep
education in a small, caring environment. |
