President, Board of Education Member, Area 1
Board Member Jay Hansen has more than 20 years experience advocating for public school children, parents, working families and his community. Jay was appointed to the school board in 2012 to fill a vacated seat. Jay previously had served on the City of Sacramento Parks & Recreation Commission. Additionally Jay is an appointee of Governor Jerry Brown to the California Health Facilities Financing Authority.
Jay’s extensive experience includes serving two State Superintendents of Public Instruction. In 2010, State Superintendent Tom Torlakson appointed Jay to his Transition Team to assist in organizing his office. He was later appointed to Team California for Healthy Kids where Jay focuses on Children’s Healthcare and Nutrition. This statewide program aims to increase physical activity and healthy eating in schools.
Torlakson’s predecessor, State Superintendent Jack O’Connell, appointed Jay in 2004 to the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Committee where he spent two years with a statewide team of educators and workforce experts to craft the state’s new guidelines for updated vocational education curriculum. He took the new curriculum all the way to the State Board of Education which voted to adopt these formal guidelines for California’s schools.
Jay currently works as the Chief Strategy Officer for the California Medical Association, where he helps 40,000 California doctors and medical students best serve their California patients. He previously served as the Legislative Director for California’s building trades workers and in the State Capitol for four different Speaker’s of the Assembly. Jay’s extensive government experience helps him effectively navigate SCUSD’s bureaucracy and bring new partnerships to the District.
Jay earned his Bachelor’s in Psychology from Occidental College and received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He serves as an elected member of the Occidental College Board of Governors and as an appointed member of the USC Sacramento Center Advisory Council.
Jay enjoys golf and our City parks and lives in the Southside Park area of downtown Sacramento where he built a home on an older lot and is working with neighbors to continue the positive revitalization of the neighborhood.
