Programs for Active Older Adults
The mission of this program is to enhance life
opportunities and choices for older adults by encouraging lifelong
learning, expanding horizons, improve quality of life, and giving purpose
so as to extend life. Classes are designed to foster life-long education
through opportunities for personal growth and development, community
involvement, survival skills, and economic sufficiency.
Our
classes are available in the following areas:

Fine and
Applied Arts

This
course is designed to provide opportunities for older adults to
enrich their lives through the use of diverse art-related
projects and crafting skills, while encouraging them to share
past life experiences within an Adult Education environment.
Students are instructed in paper, yarn, and fabric crafts;
drawing and painting; decorations; culinary arts; poetry
writing; group and individual projects; and in useful household
products and gift items. The older adult will incorporate a
variety of historic skills and techniques with new ideas while
experimenting with various crafting and art ideas. The course
will provide a full range of skill levels that will adapt to the
personal needs of the individual student. Using a variety of art
and craft materials, original and useful projects will be
created.

Understanding and Using Technology

This
course is designed to expose older adults to state of the art
technology involving the computer system. Students perform
certain tutorials and lessons created to increase their computer
competency and literacy. This course creates, increases, or
enhances the student’s hands on basic understanding of
computer hardware and software. PC and Macintosh classes are
available.

- Personal and Community Safety

This
course is designed to provide older adults an opportunity to
develop skills needed to repair small appliances and to develop
safety consciousness in using electrical household devices.
Course content includes basic electrical theory and its
applications, symbols, and circuits presented in a workshop
environment where students practice by repairing various small
appliances.
