"Sports play important educational role"

By M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia, PhD

Athletics are an important part of a student’s education. Lessons of sportsmanship, the value of physical exercise, persistence, self-confidence, relaxation, teamwork and focus are all benefits students can enjoy by participating in sports.

In our district, students participate in team activities such as soccer or volleyball or more individual activities such as track or golf.

Our pupils are excelling in several sports. This season John F. Kennedy and C.K. McClatchy boys’ soccer teams are currently in first and second place, reversing their 2003 finishes in the Metro League. Recently, Sac City’s biggest athletic successes have come in basketball, where two teams are the defending sectional champs. The Kennedy boys finished the season by winning the Sac-Joaquin Section title. Even more inspiring, are the Luther Burbank girls who overcame a third place finish in the Capitol Athletic League to win the first sectional title in school history.

Other teams also had tremendous seasons in the 2003-04 academic year. The Kennedy and C.K. McClatchy girls took the top two spots in the Metro League basketball standings and played well before losing in the sectional playoffs. And the Kennedy girls’ soccer team placed second in the Metro League. These successes demonstrate how we can, and will, give students a well-rounded educational experience and the opportunity to learn life lessons in the classroom and on the field of competition.

Parents and community members have played a tremendous role in helping our teams in a number of ways—attending games, raising money for uniforms and assisting principals initiate new activities at their sites. I am most appreciative of these efforts. Without this support our schools would not be able to offer the variety of athletic programs they currently provide.

I also want to extend my gratitude and commendation to our coaches and athletes. We are extremely proud of your accomplishments. Finally, I invite our entire community to join us in supporting and celebrating our athletes and coaches.

Great success to all.
