I am truly honored to serve as Superintendent of the
Sacramento City Unified School District. I am very grateful for the
opportunity to work with our Board of Education on behalf of our
students, staff, and community. It is a privilege to work with the
Board of Education, the Cabinet, and certificated and classified
employees of our District. As team we have modeled strong leadership,
set high standards, and provided necessary supports for our students.
The District’s vision and clarity of purpose
exemplified in our eight policy priorities and guiding principles,
articulate strong core values that include honesty, integrity,
personal responsibility and transparency in leadership. The many
successes of our District are directly attributed to these values.
Additionally, our focus on making student-centered decisions and a
“mutual success” mindset have contributed to our students’ numerous
successes.
Today I am making a most difficult announcement. I
love our District and the students we serve. I believe that great
leaders model their core values and I am motivated to do the same.
This summer I will have completed my contract and plan to retire. I
look forward to spending more time with my husband, our children and
grandchildren.
Upon reflection on the last four and a half years I
have served our District, I am most proud of the strides we have made
in better serving our students and our community. We have implemented
systems and structures that have improved student achievement, been
recognized through numerous state and national awards and also
increased student performance. We have improved relationships with our
bargaining units by treating them as valuable partners. Our fiscal and
business operations are second to none among school districts in the
nation. We are very proud that our central office operations are
successfully maintaining their certification in meeting the ISO
9001:2000 international standards of quality, and we expect to be
re-certified for another three years in April 2008. We are the only
district in California and one of ten districts nationwide. We have
developed the capacity of leaders throughout the organization to make
decisions that are guided by personal responsibility and high
expectations. Our District will continue to thrive and excel because
of the dedication and commitment of each member of our organization.
The late Mayor Joe Serna, Jr. often said that a city
could not be great without great schools. We have great schools in
Sacramento supported by a great team focused on continually improving
the achievement of our students. Our Board and employees realize the
tremendous responsibility and joy that comes with ensuring the success
of a toddler, a young child, an adolescent and an adult learner—not
only because of what it means for the student—but also for what it
means to the future of Sacramento. This is what motivates us to daily
strive for excellence.
Sac City Unified is in good hands and will continue
to thrive because of our team’s knowledge, skills and commitment to
continuous improvement. The Board of Education and the District staff
are exceptional colleagues. It is a privilege and honor to have worked
with them to serve Sacramento’s families during my tenure. I am
confident that our District will continue its forward momentum, and it
is my goal is to assist the Board in every possible way during this
transition.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the
students, families, employees, partners and community for their
support during my tenure as Superintendent. It has been an honor and
privilege to serve you.
