ROP Course Descriptions
ARTS, MEDIA, AND ENTERTAINMENT
Computer Animation I
This specialized course will help you to prepare for an entry level course
in visual communications. In this hands-on class you will learn animation,
film making, video, and advanced computer graphics. A strong interest in
drawing, filmmaking or creative writing is recommended. As a final outcome
of this class, you will produce a professional portfolio, which includes a
sketchbook, a storyboard example, and a videotape selection of work.
Computer Animation II (Advanced)
After successfully completing Computer Animation I, take 3D
modeling/animation to a new level with the introduction of advanced modeling
techniques, such as polygon controls, metaform and subdivided surfaces
(sub-patching). Explore advanced camera usage and lighting controls as your
animations gain strength and character.
Advanced Digital Media
The Advanced Digital Media course provides training for individuals seeking
entry-level positions in fields requiring computer graphic skills with an
emphasis on multimedia. Students receive training in popular application
programs such as Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, Cinema 4DXL (3D Animation),
DreamWeaver, Flash, iMovie and Final Cut Pro. In addition, students are
taught web page design skills utilizing raw HTML with JavaScript
implementation.
Students who successfully complete the course will have valuable skills in
general illustration, digital imaging, web page design and implementation,
2D and 3D animation, and digital video editing.
Computer Graphics
This course is designed to develop technical skills as they relate to the
world of work in the American business office, printing, and fine art. This
course includes introductory through advanced desktop publishing, photo
manipulation, art layout, color enhancing, and multimedia technology. This
class is open to students who are interested in learning MS Word,
PowerPoint, Photoshop and their applications in the world of work as well as
in the area of fine art.
Photography-Digital Imaging
Learn to create and edit high quality digital images. Utilizing Adobe
Photoshop, manipulate scanned photographs with a full range of selection
tools, pane engraved editing tools, color correction tools, and special
effects.
Radio Production
Do you want to create your own CDs and radio programs using the latest
digital audio and radio production equipment? Learn from an industry
professional through classroom instruction and hands-on activities.
Announcing and microphone techniques are some of the skills you will develop
along with learning to use a mixing board to digitally edit music and create
your shows. Resume writing, demo tape development, job seeking and
interview skills are also covered in the course.
Stagecraft Technology
Join the excitement of staging a theater production. You will build stage
sets and learn about lighting, sound and making props. This class is taught
by an experienced theater professional who will open the doors to the
backstage to you.
Television Occupations I
Have your television and radio production broadcast on Access Sacramento.
Along with the history of film and television production, this class will
teach you skills used by videotape editors, audio engineers, news reporters,
lighting directors, camera operators, and technical directors. You will
complete a project using a variety of production equipment including both
single and multiple TV cameras.
Visual Communications and Graphic Portfolio
This course provides students with the opportunity to prepare a portfolio
of original artwork that will be used for securing an entry-level position
in the graphic design field or for scholarship competition and acceptance to
post secondary art school. Instruction will consist of an in depth study of
advanced principles of design concepts that will take the form of graphic
design, digital imaging, multi-medial representations, log design,
printmaking, 3 dimensional product package design and color theory projects.
Students will be encouraged to seek internships and obtain freelance work
with in the community.
BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Computer and Business Technologies
Computer skills are vital to the workplace. In this course you will learn
to prepare business documents using word processing, spreadsheet, database,
and presentation software (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and
PowerPoint). Practice your new skills on-the-job through a business
internship.
Small Business Ownership and Entrepreneurship
What could be more rewarding and exciting than being your own boss? This
innovative class will teach you about the ins and outs of starting a
business. You will learn about all aspects of starting a business. For
example, you will study legal forms of business ownership, assistance
available for starting a business, how to plan a market survey and strategy,
how to prepare a financial plan, and choose a business location. You will
also design facilities and establish general corporate procedures.
Food Services and Hospitality Occupations
Are you the next Frank Fat or Emeril Lagasse? Are you interested in a
career in the hospitality industry? Occupations in the food, hotel, and
travel industries are increasing every year. This class will teach you how
to cook restaurant style, manage hospitality businesses, make fancy deserts,
and how to make money in the food and hotel industries. Additional study
areas include nutrition, safety and sanitation, and use and care of
commercial equipment. During the school year you may also work in the
industry as an intern. Upon completion of this course you will be prepared
to enter the job market or to continue your training by going to college or
a trade school.
Retail Sales & Merchandising
Do you love to shop? Well, you can learn job skills and get a discount at
the same time by taking a retail sales class. You will learn sales
techniques, customer service, display preparation, advertising, and
computers then put your new skills to work on-the-job at a retail store.
Retail Sales Occupations – Entrepreneurship
Do you have a job in retail now? Would you like to learn additional skills
that might help you own your own business some day? This class lets you
earn high school units for your job, plus it teaches you about the risks and
rewards of owning a business. You will also learn about management,
marketing, and business finance.
Virtual Enterprise/Economics
Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business class that is modeled on the
successful Virtual Enterprise International program taught in many high
schools and colleges through the world. It is designed to give you the
experience of working in a real business environment. You will determine the
nature of your business, its products and services, its management and
structure, and learn the daily operation of a business under the guidance of
the instructor with the support of real business partners. You will conduct
business transactions with other high school and college Virtual Enterprise
companies from California, the United States and throughout the world. You
will be doing market research, advertising, buying and selling
products/services, accounting, paying wages, taxes and monthly business and
personal expenses and negotiating loans with a central bank.
HEALTH
Hospital and Community Health Services
Have you ever dreamed of helping people feel better and making a difference
in their lives? Getting involved in health care through Hospital and
Community Health Services is a great way to jumpstart your career. You will
gain valuable health care experience while studying patient care, diagnostic
procedures, and administrative services. You can practice your skills
through a workplace internship in emergency, physical therapy, radiology,
medical records, patient registration, etc.
Medical Terminology
Learn structure of the human body, as well as terms related to the body
system, radiology, pharmacology and surgery word parts and how to combine
the parts to form medical terms. Analyze, define, pronounce and spell
medical terms.
Sports Therapy and Fitness Technician
Explore the exciting world of sports medicine and fitness training. People
who are skilled in the care and prevention of athletic injuries, physical
therapy, and rehabilitation are in demand. In this class you will learn how
to design exercise programs, use fitness equipment, and understand how
nutrition affects the body. As an intern you will have the opportunity to
practice such skills as sports taping, nutritional analysis, first aid,
health club management, and injury rehabilitation.
HUMAN AND PUBLIC SERVICE
Careers with Children
Do you have a passion for working with children? In this course you will
learn child development through classroom instruction while learning the
process of observation. You will have the opportunity to develop and
present age appropriate activities to children. Practice your new skills in
an internship. Choose from a variety of settings such as preschools, day
care centers, and elementary schools.
Fire Control Technician I
Acquire an overview of fire service related careers in the classroom and
drill ground training in basic fire fighting skills. This class has a
worksite component where the student will be placed in an internship at a
fire station.
ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
Auto Mechanics Technician 1 (Basic)
How would you like to work with your hands in a fully equipped auto shop
every day? You can save money by working on your own car and learn about an
industry that might someday pay you a high five figure income with full
benefits. Automotive dealers and repair shops can’t fill all their open
jobs, so they’re recruiting like never before. In this introduction to the
automotive industry you will learn from a teacher who has a minimum of five
years experience as a technician and will teach you about automotive service
and repair, shop safety, shop operation, as well as tool safety, use and
identification. The course will cover automotive engines and basic systems,
such as electrical, cooling, fuel, and suspension.
Auto Mechanics Technician II
If you really want to get ready for a high paying automotive job after high
school then after you complete Auto Mechanics Technician I you can continue
your Automotive training in Automotive Technician II. The class is equipped
with state-of-the-art equipment and very experienced teachers who will help
you thoroughly learn brakes, suspension, electrical, and engine
performance. When you complete the program you will have a wide choice of
career and education options. You can enter the workforce directly upon
graduation, continue your education through apprenticeship programs on the
job, or enter one of the many technical colleges.
Construction Technology
Would you like recruiters contacting you to work for their company?
Would you like to be paid while you go to school to learn your job? Would
you like to earn a very comfortable living all of your life? The
Construction Technology class will teach you the basics of the industry from
building design through demolition. You will build walls, wire circuits,
pour concrete, and learn how to estimate materials. Carpentry is
emphasized, and there are many contractors and construction workers who help
with the class. In fact, you will have an opportunity for a paid internship
in the summer. After you graduate you can either go directly to work, enter
an apprenticeship program, or study construction management or engineering
in college. A construction job can even pay your way through college, and
the Construction Technology class is your first step on this stairway to
success.
Computer Assisted Design and Drafting I
Bring your ideas to life in Computer Assisted Design & Drafting. This class
combines creativity and technology to teach you about structural,
mechanical, and architectural design as well as commercial art, drafting,
and computer aided manufacturing. You will complete projects using the same
software that jet planes and skyscrapers are designed with, and you may even
have the opportunity to work as an intern with design professionals.
Computer Assisted Design and Drafting II (Advanced)
Receive advanced training in computer-aided drafting with a specialization
in architecture. You will explore 3D design or advanced architecture through
the use of AutoDesk’s Inventor. In addition, you will develop projects
related to your interests.
Nursery and Floriculture
Don’t miss your chance to work in a real greenhouse propagating and growing
a variety of plants. You will learn plant identification, flower arranging
and hands-on landscaping
Nursery, Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance
This class is perfect if you like to be outdoors, and you won’t believe the
wide variety of jobs available in the landscaping and nursery industry.
Want to learn how plants grow? Your classroom is a greenhouse and your
teacher has a green thumb. Do you like art and design? Landscape
architecture might be for you. You’ll learn drafting, design, and blueprint
skills in this class. Do you like tools and machinery? In grounds
maintenance you’ll learn to maintain and establish landscapes, transplant
and prune trees, shrubs, and flowers, and work with irrigation systems.
From plant identification to solving soil problems to using and maintaining
equipment, this class will get you ready to grow!
Small Engine Repair
Do things that go vroom get your motor running? Learn the fundamentals of
troubleshooting and repairing small engine components, ignition systems,
electrical circuits, and fuel systems. In this introductory class you will
disassemble and rebuild all types of small engines, including two-stroke,
four-stroke, outboard, and riding mower engines. There will always be a
need for skilled technicians. Your instructor will provide you the hands-on
learning to start you off with a strong foundation.
Woodworking Careers
Have you ever wished that you could build something yourself instead of just
studying things other people have built? Well, in a woods class that’s
exactly what you can do. We’ll teach you to use hand and power tools safely
to build interesting projects. For example, you can learn the design,
layout, and construction of cabinets. Blueprint reading, architectural
design, wood technology, and construction careers are all included. This is
a class you will look forward to every day, and if you have the talent and
interest it can also be the first step toward a very high paying job in the
construction industry.
Web Author Training
New software and ideas for web design happen so fast that the industry is
inventing new jobs every year. Every business uses the web, creating high
demand for web authors. We’ll teach you the basics of web design and
computer graphic skills with an emphasis on multimedia. You’ll learn HTML,
web page implementation, and the most popular software such as Dream Weaver,
Flash, and Fireworks. Upon graduation you can get an entry level job or you
can build on your strong foundation and enroll in college or a technical
school.
