Health Support Services Department

The mission of the Health Support Services Department is to provide school health programs which assist students, families and the community to reach optimal physical, mental and social health in order to succeed in school and in life.  The Health Support Services Department supervises district nurses and coordinates all required student immunizations. 

Monitors and implements mandated school health services including: screening for vision, hearing and scoliosis; health assessment for special education; assisting in communicable disease control; assessment and updating of immunizations; referrals to free or low-cost community resources; reporting suspected child abuse and neglect; providing supervision of Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures; and promoting the Child Health and Disability prevention Program Health Examinations.

      Provides school nursing services in specific areas such as elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, Infant-Toddler Programs, Hiram Johnson Family Education Center, Prevention/Intervention, Parent Participation Preschool and Adults with Disabilities. School nurses provide Family Life Education, Nutrition Education, Drug and Alcohol Prevention Education, and referrals to free or low-cost community resources.

Program eligibility:  Schools which allocate categorical, Special Education or general funding to purchase nursing services at their site

Provides specialized physical health care procedures such as monitoring breathing, monitoring glucose levels, administering medication, and other procedures as ordered by physicians (e.g. gastrostomy feeding, catheterization etc.)

Program eligibility:  Students with a chronic health condition, such as asthma or diabetes, who need nursing assistance but who are not eligible for Special Education services may be eligible.

·         Home and Hospital Instruction

Provides academic instruction for students who are unable to attend school due to a medical condition.

Program eligibility:  Non-special education students in grades K-12 who are registered in the Sacramento City Unified School District, are between the ages of five years nine months, and eighteen years and/or have not graduated from high school. To be eligible, students must be unable to attend regular school for six weeks or longer because of health impairment as diagnosed by a licensed physician.

TB testing is mandatory for current employees every four years.  As a service to district staff and volunteers, Health Services conducts free testing during announced periods of the year.

State-mandated bloodborne pathogen training and immunization.

Program eligibility:  Any District employee, particularly those in high risk exposure category for transmission (coaches, office managers, bus drivers, plumbers, etc.)
