Susan Miller was named Interim Superintendent on June
5, 2008 by the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of
Education. She will serve as interim superintendent for one year
beginning July 1, 2008. Ms. Miller is the second woman in the
district’s more than 150-year history to lead the city school system
and is a proud product of Sacramento’s public schools.
Ms. Miller has served in the city district for 24 years as a teacher,
principal, and associate superintendent. Her career began teaching
newly arrived immigrant children at Maple Elementary School. For the
past 12 years she has served in the district’s central office engaged
in curriculum, instruction and supervising principals.
Ms. Miller has led the district’s Blue Ribbon Task for
Equity and Achievement and assisted in writing a companion report to
the district’s strategic plan about closing the achievement gap.
Other professional responsibilities include serving as
coordinator for a summer school demonstration program, a
consultant/trainer with the California Department of Education,
trainer with the California School Leadership Academy, and as a test
reader for the Educational Testing Service.
Ms. Miller graduated with honors from California State
University, Sacramento (CSUS) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child
Development in 1975 and received a Master of Arts in Special
Education, also from CSUS, in 1983. In addition she has earned a
standard elementary, learning handicapped specialists and preliminary
administrative services credentials from CSUS and a professional
administrative services credential from the University of LaVerne.
Her affiliations include membership in the Association
of School Administrators (ACSA), senior associate of the California
School Leadership Academy, member of the California Association of
School Curriculum Development, and memberships in Phi Delta Kappa and
Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. In 2007 she attended the National
Academy for Superintendents.
Ms. Miller’s recognitions include: the 2008 Above and
Beyond Special Education, ACSA 2007 Region III Curriculum and
Instruction Administrator of the Year, ACSA 1998 Region III Silver
Star Award, California Partners for Educational Excellence in 1995,
and Association of Mexican American Educators Outstanding Teacher in
1986.
She lived in Sacramento until her 1996 marriage to John
Miller, a Yuba City council member. Ms. Miller has two grown
daughters, Stephanie and Julie, and two grandchildren.
